Lionel Messi’s relationship with Paris may be coming to an end.
According to French media RMC local time on the evening of May 2, Paris Saint-Germain Football Club decided to suspend Lionel Messi from the team for two weeks (i.e. suspension from training, matches and salary). The reason is that the latter traveled to Saudi Arabia without the club’s permission and missed the team’s training session on Monday.
The decision was taken on the evening of May 2nd, with immediate effect, according to the report. Paris has considered the situation and considers it a serious mistake within the club. The club initiated this typical disciplinary procedure after an unauthorized absence of an employee. Furthermore, Paris Club will not comment further on this matter.
RMC said that with this decision, Paris club president Nasser emphasized the new sports policy that no player should be above the team.
In the next two weeks, Paris Saint-Germain will play two league matches: away to Troyes on May 8 at 02:45 GMT and at home to Ajaccio on May 14 at 3 pm. Two weeks later, Paris has away matches against Auxerre and Strasbourg, as well as a home match against Clermont.
It is worth mentioning that Messi’s absence from training took place after Paris’ 1-3 loss to Lorient in Ligue 1. If Messi leaves Paris this summer, he will make a maximum of three more appearances for Paris after his suspension is lifted.
Messi is reportedly a tourist ambassador for Saudi Arabia and travels there as part of his huge contract of about 30 million euros a year. But in the meantime, the rest of the Paris club was called to the base for a recovery session on Monday morning. Messi’s trip reportedly came as a shock to some Paris teammates in the locker room, and sports adviser Luis Campos was not given any prior notice.
So far this season, Paris is in 1st place in Ligue 1, five points ahead of 2nd place Marseille with five rounds to play. As for the Champions League, Paris lost 0-3 in two rounds to Bayern Munich in the eighth final.
