Hello friends, I’m Chris.
I’m here to share with you what I’ve learned about the hygiene industry over the years.
It’s impossible for moms to be unfamiliar with diapers as a 24-hour baby fit, so do you know how many evolutions diapers have gone through to become what they are today? And what was used to pocket your baby’s little bottom before diapers came along?
Let’s take a look at: Part 2 of the evolution of diapers.

From cloth diapers to the prototype of disposable diapers
Around 1820
Diapering habits in Europe changed dramatically with the Industrial Revolution in Britain.
At this time, the working class began to buy furniture for the first time, and they did not like babies to soil their new property. So, they tried to use cloth to catch the baby’s excrement.
In the 1880s
People invented the safety pin, which helped to form a tighter protection around the baby’s bottom and prevent excrement from leaking out.
Although in some cases, the safety pin can pierce the baby’s skin, causing excrement to penetrate the baby’s skin, causing bacterial, viral and fungal infections, and sometimes even fatal injuries.
1940s
During World War II, women joined the workforce like men, and they did not have the time and energy to deal with the heavy task of washing diapers.
At this time, diaper washing services first appeared.
Every week, clean and disinfected diapers would be delivered to homes, while dirty diapers would be placed in separate trash cans and taken away by diaper washers.
In addition to diaper washing services, the birth of diapers is closely related to World War II. In order to solve the problem of cotton shortage during World War II, the Germans invented a fiber tissue paper made from wood pulp. This tissue paper is very soft and highly absorbent.
Later, a Swedish company cut this tissue paper into special shapes, folded and packaged it in gauze or mesh knitted fabrics, and then put it in underwear for use, but the cost was very high and the price was very expensive.
1946
A housewife named Maria Dono cut the shower curtain into a plastic cover to cover the diaper to prevent leakage. In 1951, she applied for a patent and sold the patent to a waterproof diaper manufacturer for $1 million.
1947
A housewife named Valerie Hunter Gordon invented a two-stage diaper, which consists of a disposable pad (composed of cellulose filled with cotton wool) and an adjustable plastic fabric. Every time it is changed, the disposable pad inside can be replaced. It entered full production in 1949.
1956
Mr. Miller, the development manager of Procter & Gamble, completely changed the history of diapers.
In order to find a simpler way to change diapers for his grandson, he invented disposable diapers with good water absorption and comfortable wearing.
This invention was rated as “one of the 100 greatest inventions of the 20th century” by Time magazine in 1961.
1980
‘Chinese Tang Xinyuan, the father of space suit, added polymer absorber into the suit and invented a diaper that could absorb 1400mL of water, which perfectly solved the problem of urination in space.
Since then, we have known as ‘diapers’.

In the 21st century, from convenience and comfort to hygiene and environmental protection
The functions of diapers have exploded and become dazzling. Their softness, lightness, water absorption, leakage resistance, and breathability are getting better and better, giving more care to the little butt.
However, the environmental problems caused by the difficulty of degrading diapers are becoming increasingly obvious. 30% of the plastic components in buried diapers are difficult to degrade.
There are already diaper manufacturers developing diapers made from recycled pulp and polymers.
Recycled diapers contain 20% to 30% recycled materials such as internal absorbers. They look and feel like new products and have no odor. Garbage such as plastic is removed from the sorted and recycled diapers, and feces and urine are removed from the pulp and polymers. They can be reused after ozone sterilization, bleaching and deodorization.
Diapers can be said to be one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century, solving the headaches of thousands of parents who have to wash diapers.
